Why You Should Add Ceramic Pendant Lighting to Your Kitchen

At any given time, your kitchen serves as the central hub of your home. Great lighting that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing is key to experiencing the space to its fullest potential. Whether you’re lighting a small dining table, a large island, or anything in between, ceramic pendant lighting is one of the best lighting solutions for your kitchen. In this post, we’ll go over some of the benefits of ceramic pendant lighting and how specifically it can enhance the functionality and beauty of your space.

Benefits of Ceramic Lighting

When it comes to kitchen lighting, you can be sure of one thing: it will be exposed to the rigors of prolonged use, high heat and all forms of general wear. Ceramic lighting is an ideal choice for the kitchen because it’s extremely durable. It offers significant corrosion and wear resistance to heat, chemicals and pressure, which help to prolong its life. It’s also a beautiful material that when glazed, has the added benefit of not tarnishing.

Justice Design Group is the largest manufacturer of ceramic lighting in the United States. The company’s durable and stylish products are handmade in the USA using sustainable methods. From the initial clay casting to the final artisanal glaze, Justice Design Group ceramic pendant kitchen lighting fixtures are hand-cast and hand-finished to the highest quality and will not rust or corrode.

Ceramic vs. Other Materials

You might be wondering why ceramic pendant kitchen lighting might be preferable over lighting made from other materials such as metal or glass. Ceramic is superior, to both glass and metal, when it comes to withstanding changes in temperature. So, for example, if you’re lighting a kitchen island that has a stove, using ceramic pendant lighting, the chances of the fixtures withstanding the rising heat are much higher than with a similarly styled glass or metal pendants. Ceramic lighting is a preferable choice over glass lighting when a space calls for focused, directional lighting, which is often the case in a kitchen. While glass lighting will typically diffuse light outwards, ceramic pendant lighting will direct it downwards onto the work surface creating a much more functional environment. Ceramic lighting is also easier to clean and care for than glass and metal lighting fixtures. Glazed ceramic wipes clean of stains and debris with minimal effort. In a kitchen environment, where there’s constant splashing and splattering of grease and other food substances, the benefits of an easy-cleaning ceramic surface cannot be overstated.

Common Types of Ceramic Pendant Kitchen Lights and Uses

When it comes to ceramic pendant kitchen lights you have a variety of choices. Depending on the specific application and your exact needs, you can choose from one or more of the following:

Mini Pendant

Standard size pendants over areas of the kitchen like an island or bar can easily overwhelm the space. That’s where mini pendants come in. A scaled-down version of the pendant, the mini pendant, offers enough task lighting for meal prep while having the ability to impart mood and ambiance to the room. The Ceramics Small 1-Light Pendant is a symmetrical design that draws in the eye. Perfect to hang alone or in multiples over a kitchen island.

Multi-Light Pendant

A multi-light fixture is a group of pendant fixtures attached to a single canopy and suspended from the ceiling. This type of fixture is easy to install, offers focused illumination, plenty of visual appeal and is a great way to add primary or task lighting to your kitchen. You can also create the effect of a multi-light pendant by grouping a cluster of smaller pendant lights, like the Arabesque 1-Light Pendant, and adjusting the heights to varying lengths. Draw the eye to your adorable breakfast nook or handcrafted, vintage dining table by mounting a ceramic multi-light pendant.

Cone Pendant

Cone pendants range in style from clean and classic to more on the eccentric side. In the kitchen, cone pendants work well in functional applications, like hanging over a high counter or bar-style table. The Ceramic Large Cone 1-Light Pendant is a modern fixture with a strikingly elongated design and a central groove embellishment that captures attention.

Dome Pendant

Dome pendants, as their name suggests, are typically half to three-quarters dome-shaped and lend a sleek modern look to the kitchen environment. They work great for illuminating a table or a kitchen island. The Oriel Pendant is a contemporary modern piece that comes in a bisque paintable finish. A generous opening allows ample light to wash down from the fixture.

Types of Ceramic Finishes

One of the many great qualities of ceramic pendant kitchen lighting is its versatility and ability to enhance the visual appeal of a space. Justice Design Group ceramic finishes are handcrafted by artisans and are available in four categories:

Bisque

This is an unfinished and unpainted ceramic fixture with a natural look. You can enjoy it as is, or you can have it customized any way you want. Justice Design Group has used paints, stencils, and more to create unique, one-of-a-kind, custom lighting fixtures.

Glazes

These glass-like finishes are kiln-fired directly onto the surface, providing a uniquely ceramic look. This category also includes two-tone finishes featuring a glazed exterior with a painted interior, as well as solid color paints.

Smooth Faux

This is a finishing style using a combination of paints and other techniques to recreate the look of marble, rich metal patinas, and other materials. You’re invited to provide a brand and paint code to Justice Design Group and they’ll custom paint a fixture for you.

Textured Faux

Finished to resemble slate, travertine or hammered metal, Justice Design Group meticulously sculpts, hand textures, and hand paints each piece.

Industrial

Ceramic lighting is great at both blending in with and enhancing the raw and utilitarian style of an industrial style kitchen. The American Classic Wall Sconce hits the industrial look right on the mark with its hand-cast and hand-finished ceramic base and a vintage bulb for an authentic look.

Modern

The modern kitchen is a celebration of simplicity, natural materials, neutral colors and the elimination of details that are unnecessary. The clean finish of ceramic lends itself beautifully to modern kitchen environments. Case-in-point is the 1-Light Pendant from the Radiance Collection featuring the sphere form looking in at an exposed minimalist bulb.

Scandinavian

The clean lines, muted colors and “hygge” (cozy) feel of Scandinavian design is perfectly aligned with the inherently natural vibe of ceramic. The Ceramics Large Sphere 1-Light Pendant’s symmetrically designed orb dazzles in blue and features a central groove embellishment. It’s a piece that a Scandinavian designer might say is “not too much, not too little, just right.”

Transitional

The classic and timeless transitional kitchen space is the ideal home for a clean and calming ceramic fixture. Eschewing extreme-look design and inhabiting a more neutral space, the Ceramics Trapezoid 1-Light Pendant features an elegant upward-flaring socket that expands into a downward-flaring shade. Excellent for illuminating tables and counters with a bit of understated ceramic flair.

Install and Mounting Guidelines

Hanging ceramic pendant lighting in your kitchen can seem complicated, but by following a few simple guidelines, you can have the exact look and functionality for the space that you want.

Size Guidelines

Dining Table: Choose a ceramic pendant that complements the size and shape of your dining table without overwhelming it. One that’s about six inches narrower on each side than the smallest width of the dining table is ideal.

Kitchen Island: If you have a smaller island that’s less than five feet, choose two small or medium ceramic pendants. For a larger island choose three medium to large pendants.

Height Guidelines

Dining Table: As a general rule, hang ceramic pendants 30-34 inches above dining and kitchen tables. For ceilings that are higher than eight feet, add three inches to the hanging height per foot.

Kitchen Island: Pendant lights should hang about 28-34 inches above the countertop of an island.

Now that you know about many of the benefits of ceramic pendant lighting, you’re ready for the fun part: to pick the fixture that’s just right for your kitchen environment and personal taste.
